Helping Guatemala’s Q’eqchi Maya to Help Themselves
Ak TenamitThe Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund (GTF) is a nonprofit fundraising organization that exclusively supports the work of the Guatemalan association Ak’ Tenamit. Ak’ Tenamit works in the indigenous Q’eqchi Maya communities of eastern Guatemala to improve health, education, family incomes, community development, the situation of women, the environment and promotion of Q’eqchi culture. The GTF raises funds for Ak’ Tenamit’s programs, coordinates material donations, and provides logistical support. Among its responsibilities are soliciting and administering child sponsorships, healthcare partnerships and other donations, coordinating with Rotary Clubs, schools and churches, arranging group presentations, publishing a periodic newsletter and other outreach.

The GTF benefits from the guidance of its non-compensated Board of Directors, some of who volunteer considerable time for administrative duties. The Fund consequently manages to keep its operating costs at less than 15% of donations, which means that most of the money people donate goes to the Q’eqchi Maya communities that Ak’ Tenamit serves. Individual donors can support Ak’ Tenamit’s important work by becoming a child sponsor, a healthcare partner, or by contributing to its varied other needs.

Supporting Ak’ Tenamit’s Vital Work Since 1993
The Guatemala Tomorrow Fund (GTF) was created by friends and family of Ak’ Tenamit founder Steve Dudenhoefer to facilitate raising funds for the project. During the first years, the GTF operated out of the homes of board members, but as Ak’ Tenamit grew and its needs became more complex, the organization moved into donated office space, hired an administrator and, eventually, a director. The GTF has published fairly regular newsletters over the years and has coordinated the production of two videos on the Ak’ Tenamit, as well as frequent presentations by Steve Dudenhoefer at churches, schools, Rotary Clubs and other organizations. Because it is based in Jupiter, Florida, the GTF has developed a strong network of supporters in South Florida, but organizations and individuals all over the United States have supported Ak’ Tenamit’s innovative work through the GTF.
